The 75th edition of the Berlinale featured two films by former LabMed 2024 residents, reflecting the growing resonance of Mediterranean voices on the international stage.
Michelle Keserwany, a Lebanese filmmaker, was awarded the Golden Bear for Best Short Film for Les Chenilles, co-directed with her sister Noel Keserwany. Presented in the Berlinale Shorts section, the film explores the connection between two Levantine women working in a restaurant in Lyon, addressing themes of exile, memory, and sisterhood. Inspired by an article by Fawwaz Traboulsi, the film weaves together past and present to highlight legacies of exploitation and female solidarity.
Abdallah Al Khatib, a Palestinian director, presented The Settlement (Al Mosta’mera) in the Perspectives section. The film follows Hossam, a 23-year-old hired at a factory in Alexandria after the death of his father in a workplace accident. Through this intimate narrative, the film explores family responsibility, labor conditions, and the social dynamics of Egypt’s working class.
