Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire at the LAB MED 2023

June 10, 2023

Meditalents is delighted to welcome Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire for this new LabMed session!

Back from the Cannes Film Festival, where his film, Black Flies, starring Tye Sheridan and Sean Penn, was selected in the Official Competition, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire continues to make his path through powerful films in which he uses reality as a narrative tool to construct his fictional subjects.

After a screening of his film Une prière avant l'aube (A prayer before dawn) in front of our laureates, he will share his experience with the young authors taking part in this residency during a Masterclass, followed by individuals meeting to discuss their project.

A prayer before dawn is about the violence of Thai incarceration, the true story of a young English boxer (Billy Moore) expatriated to Thailand, who must fight to survive in a prison where strength and combativeness reign supreme.

Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire has received numerous awards throughout his career:

⁃ Prize at the Paris International Human Rights Film Festival in 2003 for Carlitos Medellin

⁃ Prix Michel d'Ornano at the Deauville Film Festival and Prix de l'Espoir at the Cannes Film Festival- Un Certain Regard in 2008 for Johnny Mad Dog

⁃ Best Director Award at the La Rochelle TV Drama Festival for Punk
