About the Author
Gianluca Abbate is an artist and filmmaker based in Rome. Born in Salerno on June 5, 1980, he graduated in editing from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome (2005) and holds a degree from the DAMS program in Bologna (2002). His works have been exhibited in major museums and exhibitions, including MOCA Hiroshima (A Window to the World, 2019), the Macro Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome (2018), and the Torrance Art Museum in Los Angeles (2018). Other notable venues include the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (2016), MAXXI, and the MAM – Museum of Modern Art in Rome. In 2025, he also presented a live video performance at the Triennale di Milano for Unexpected Matches.
He has participated in numerous film and experimental video festivals, such as the 57th Ann Arbor Film Festival (2019), the 23rd Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur (2019), and the 36th Torino Film Festival (2018). His work has been broadcast on ARTE France and RAI. He has received several awards, including a Nastro d'Argento, Best Short Film at the 32nd Torino Film Festival (TFF32), and Best Film at Videoformes (Clermont-Ferrand) and Visioni Italiane.
Gianluca collaborates with RAI and SKY, and teaches at NABA (New Academy of Fine Arts) in Rome as well as at DAMS Roma Tre. He also serves as a mentor for Suoni e Visioni, a workshop for emerging artists developed by AAMOD.
